New In This Release Spring 2001 This section lists the major system-wide enhancements. For all enhancements per product, please refer to the respective Readme.txt files. 4.1 Microwave Oven Robustness changed to use fragmentation. In order to keep frames short (in time) to get them transmitted during the transmit gaps of a (domestic) microwave oven, the MAC will fragment long frames. 4.2 Station adaptation of cell thresholds. Stations adapt themselves to the settings of the Access Point they associate with. This applies to the following parameters: * Distance between APs, * RTS/CTS Medium Reservation, * Microwave Oven Robustness. These parameters are passed to the Station by the Access Point, and overrule the settings in the Station. Hence this feature functions only if the Access Point(s) support it. 4.3 Load balancing. This feature attempts to balance the load over the available overlapping cells. The Access Point maintains measurement of the load in its cell and provides that to the Stations. Stations use this information in their roaming decisions. The better the comms quality to potential Access Points, the bigger the impact of the load is. This feature functions only if all Access Points in the network support it. 4.4 Telnet CLI Proxy for Access Points A Proxy program provides a Command Line Interface (CLI) to the AP-I and AP-II. The CLI Proxy is to run on a Linux or Windows NT server. Instead of connecting to an Access Point directly, you can connect to this server using a Telnet(terminal) application. You interact with a command line shell, which in turn communicates with the Access Points using SNMP. The CLI Proxy can also be run locally on your PC or Workstation. The command line interface can also be used for scripting. ------------------------------------------------------------------- 5. Installation Notes 5.1 Windows Client Software Refer to the PC Card User's Guide (DOCS\PC_Card\UG_PC.pdf) for the installation of this Avaya Wireless client software. For Windows 2000, refer to the "Are you using Windows 2000?" flyer (DOCS\PC_Card\WIN2000.pdf). 5.1.1 Upgrade from WaveLAN/IEEE When you are upgrading your system from a previous version of WaveLAN/IEEE (prior to the Summer 2000 CD / System Release 6.1), it is best to delete (or update) the previous WaveLAN/IEEE driver and utilities before installing the new software. Remove the CQI and the WaveMANAGER/CLIENT utilities via the Windows Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs function. Refer to the PC Card User' Guide Appendix B, or Windows 2000 flyer, for Upgrading the Miniport Driver. Note, that the User's Guide does not specify all the correct file names. When deleting previous WaveLAN/IEEE driver files, after removing the driver via the Windows Control Panel, delete the following files if present: For Windows 95: c:\windows\system\wvlan41.sys c:\windows\system\wvlanuif.vxd c:\windows\system\wv41inst.dll c:\windows\system\wvlninst.dll c:\windows\system\wvlan41.hlp c:\windows\system\wvlan.hlp c:\windows\system\wvlan41.cnt c:\windows\system\wvlan.cnt c:\windows\inf\wvlan41.inf For Windows 98: c:\windows\system\wvlan41.sys c:\windows\system\wvlanuif.vxd c:\windows\system\wv41inst.dll c:\windows\system\wvlninst.dll c:\windows\system\wvlan41.hlp c:\windows\system\wvlan.hlp c:\windows\system\wvlan41.cnt c:\windows\system\wvlan.cnt c:\windows\inf\wvlan41.inf c:\windows\inf\other\ Provider - Lucent TechnologiesWvlan41.inf or: Lwvlan41.inf For Windows NT: c:\windows\system32\drivers\wvlan41.sys c:\windows\system32\wvlan41.dll c:\windows\system32\wvlan41.hlp c:\windows\system32\wvlan.hlp c:\windows\system32\wvlan41.cnt c:\windows\system32\wvlan.cnt The Client Manager is not compatible with all previous WaveLAN/IEEE drivers. On drivers from before the Summer 2000 CD / System Release 6.1, it reports "No wireless card driver present". You need to upgrade to the new Avaya Wireless Miniport Driver. When during the installation of the Client Manager you have removed the CQI and the WaveMANAGER/CLIENT, while you still have the WaveLAN/IEEE Rel 6.0 Miniport Driver (version 6.00) installed, you may get the message "The CQI tool is not installed! To install..(etc.)". Please ignore this message. You need to upgrade to the new Avaya Wireless Miniport Driver. The new Miniport Drivers require the Station firmware on the card to be of version 6.04 or higher. Please run the Wireless Station firmware Update utility (SOFTWARE\PC_CARD\FIRMWARE\ WSU10728.EXE) to update the firmware. This firmware update utility requires the Avaya Wireless Miniport Driver to be of version 6.14 or higher, so you may have to upgrade the Driver before running this utility. 5.2 New Card Firmware v7.xx The new Station and AP Functions card firmware is interoperable with previous versions of the card firmware since v6.04. However, if any cards in Client Stations are upgraded to firmware v7.xx, we advice to upgrade all Access Points and Residential Gateways in the network with the software provided in this Release. ------------------------------------------------------------------- 6.
